New Visiting Researcher: Dr Jan Babnik

AI4DH welcomes visiting researcher Dr Jan Babnik from the IRRIS Institute. During his research visit, Jan will explore a key question at the intersection of artificial intelligence and the humanities: How can semiotic and philosophical traditions contribute to the methodological use of large language models (LLMs) in humanities research?

LLMs can identify patterns that may be difficult for humans to discern. At the same time, human researchers can recognise meanings, contexts and patterns that LLMs may overlook. Rather than treating these differences as a limitation, Jan’s research asks how they can be used productively in humanities research.

His work at AI4DH will combine computational approaches with semiotic and philosophical perspectives. He will deepen his understanding of computational methods in the humanities while critically examining and testing assumptions about the use of LLMs for semiotic analysis.

As a case study, Jan will work with Dragon Slayer narratives, using them to investigate how LLM-based approaches can complement established methods of narrative and semiotic analysis.
