Best in Heritage Award for Dr Antoine Douce and his project NewsEye

The Best in Heritage is a non-governmental, non-profit organisation dedicated to promoting all aspects of professional excellence in heritage occupations and organises an annual global conference each year.

At the end of each year, The Best in Heritage delivers a list of relevant award-winning museum, heritage, and conservation projects. Their Board of Advisors approves the final selection of laureates.

The project NewsEye led by Antoine Doucet won the European Heritage Award / Europa Nostra Award 2024 in the Research Category. The project was selected out of 206 applications and was recognised for its significant contributions to open science and digital humanities.

The awarded project enhanced access to historical European newspapers (1850-1950) for research, libraries and the general public. It has developed AI tools for automatic text recognition, newspaper structure analysis and multilingual content processing.
