Visiting opportunities in AI4DH

Apply for a research stay at the European Centre of Excellence in Artificial Intelligence for Digital Humanities (CoE in AI4DH) at the University of Ljubljana.

Research visits to the CoE in AI4DH  are intended for early-stage to established researchers working in the broader fields of the humanities, social sciences, and artificial intelligence for digital humanities (including social sciences), who want to collaborate, upgrade their research methods with computational methodologies (such as data visualisation, information retrieval, data mining, natural language processing, large language models, agentic technologies, and artificial intelligence), develop research proposals and/or share their competences through the CoE in AI4DH in the form of seminars and teaching.

Visits will provide researchers with the opportunity to broaden their academic networks, collaborate with AI4DH experts, and gain international experience. The visits give access to new resources, innovative viewpoints, and new institutional environments, all of which shall contribute to enhancing research quality and advancing career development.

What do we offer?

The visits have three main non-exclusive goals:

GOAL 1: Prepare high-quality proposals for external funding

The CoE in AI4DH is welcoming researchers with original research ideas for research visits, during which they can develop their ideas into project applications for external funding.  A host team of AI4DH researchers will assist visiting researchers in identifying the scientific challenges from a computer science perspective and in describing the scientific and technological aspects of the proposal. Additionally, the CoE team will support visiting researchers in writing the proposal. This way, the visiting researchers will have the opportunity to focus on their areas of speciality and build on them with the methodological support provided in computation and AI. It is important to already identify potential calls, which would typically be within the Horizon Europe framework, for instance ERC or MSCA proposals to be hosted in the CoE in AI4DH, or collaborative project proposals involving the CoE in AI4DH.

GOAL 2: Implementation of short training courses

The CoE in AI4DH is welcoming visiting researchers who can offer lectures during up to one-week visits for seminars on interesting and innovative content related to AI and digital humanities.

GOAL 3: Conducting research using the research infrastructure offered by CoE and AI4DH at UL FRI

The CoE in AI4DH is open to researchers with original research ideas for research visits, during which they can conduct their research using the CoE’s advanced computational infrastructure (with the assistance of the AI4DH team) and collaborate with AI4DH scholars with the aim to create new knowledge and produce joint research outputs.

Who can participate?

Researchers employed at any higher education or research institution are eligible to apply. Visits will typically last from one week to four months.

Applications are open continuously. However, the collection, processing and selection of applications will take place at regular intervals, with deadlines on: 31 January, 31 May, and 31 October 2026.

The applicants will be notified of the decision within four weeks of the respective collection date.

The candidates should ensure that their research visit is in line with their academic responsibilities and commitments at their home university.

How to apply?

Check whether your research aligns with the CoE in AI4DH research and activities. E-mail us at info@ai4dh.eu with your application, indicating the goal(s) of the visit (visits combining multiple goals are especially welcome), and including the following files (all in PDF format):

  • Motivation letter (description of both your expectations from the CoE, and what you offer to the CoE)
  • Curriculum vitae
  • Research visit budget proposal, as well as the timeframe and length of the visit
  • An outline of your research objectives and planned activities (visits under goals 1 and/or 3)
  • Description of the education or training you offer – duration, target group, required prior knowledge of participants, brief presentation of the content (visits under goal 2)
  • The call(s) for proposals within which you would like to submit a research project application (visits under goal 1)
  • Recommendation letters (optional)

Funding

We have limited funding available to support visitors to the CoE with their living expenses (lodging, travel, and daily allowances).

Reimbursement of expenses will be made after the visit has been completed and proofs have been submitted (travel costs, accommodation costs, proof of lecture delivered / project application completed / research paper submitted), in accordance with the budget plan.

We especially welcome applicants who can demonstrate motivation by co-funding their visits (with support from home institution or any other mechanism). Applicants who can fully cover the costs of their visits are also welcome to contact us and drop an email at info@ai4dh.eu.

The organisers reserve the right to suggest adjustments to the financial plan in line with the AI4DH CoE’s available budget.

Selection criteria

The following selection criteria will be applied:

  1. Relevance and alignment of the topic with AI4DH activities, as well as scientific and societal impact.
  2. Goal 1: Quality, relevance and feasibility of the proposal plan with respect to the identified call(s) (clarity and feasibility, with well-defined objectives and timeline).
  3. Goal 2: Complementarity and/or added value of the proposed training of the visiting researcher with the lectures offered by the CoE.
  4. Goal 3: Quality, relevance and feasibility of the research plan (novelty, clarity, and feasibility of the research plan during the visit, with well-defined objectives and timeline).
  5. Track record of the applicant (academic achievements, previous research experience).
  6. Added value of the visit (access to unique resources, infrastructure, or expertise not available at the home institution, opportunities for skill development and knowledge transfer).
  7. Motivation and commitment (applicant’s motivation for the visit and commitment to submitting a joint proposal).
  8. Expected outcome (clear description of expected outcomes, including submission of a joint research proposal).
  9. Acceptability and sustainability of the financial plan.
  10. Support letters (quality of recommendation letters).
